Compassion in Gomoa Wassa: A Morning with Vaida at Jusbua Educational Centre

In Gomoa Wassa, a community in Ghana’s Central Region, I had the privilege of speaking with Vaida, a teacher at Jusbua Educational Centre—a school that serves as both a learning space and a safe haven for children in the area.

Vaida has been teaching at the school for two years. When asked how things were going, she replied, “It’s going somehow well.” Her tone was modest, but the reality she described was layered with challenges.

The Daily Struggles of Teaching and Caregiving

Educating and caring for children in underserved communities is no small task. “Sometimes the kids disturb a lot,” she said with a tired smile. “It’s difficult to take care of them, but we try.”

Despite the emotional and physical toll, Vaida and her colleagues show up every day. Their motivation isn’t financial—their payment is not good enough, she admitted—but rather a deep sense of compassion and commitment to the children’s well-being.

They receive small allowances, which they stretch to cover personal needs. Vaida lives nearby, which helps, but the challenges remain. “Sometimes you feel tired,” she said. “But we try our best.”

What They Need to Keep Going

When asked what would make their work easier, Vaida didn’t hesitate:

  • fridge and deep freezer for the kitchen
  • Cooking wares and a gas cooker
  • Textbooks, exercise books, and chairs for the children
  • A more conducive environment for learning and care

These are not luxuries—they are basic tools that would significantly improve the lives of both teachers and students.

Uhuru For All: Supporting Grassroots Change

This is where Uhuru For All, a U.S.-based NGO, steps in. Dedicated to supporting African communities, Uhuru For All believes in empowering local educators and caregivers like Vaida, who are the backbone of early childhood development in underserved areas.

Through partnerships, donations, and advocacy, Uhuru For All aims to provide the resources schools like Jusbua Educational Centre need—from educational materials to kitchen equipment and infrastructure improvements.

Leadership and Vision

Under the guidance of Head Teacher Clement Boamah, Jusbua Educational Centre continues to serve its community with dedication and heart. But the need for support is urgent and ongoing.

Why It Matters

Vaida’s story is a reminder that real change begins with real people. Her daily efforts may seem small, but they are shaping futures. “You never know,” I told her, “one of these children could be the President of Ghana someday.”

And it’s true. The children she teaches today could grow into leaders, innovators, and changemakers. But they need support—and so do the people who nurture them.

To truly understand the spirit of Jusbua Educational Centre and the dedication of teachers like Vaida, we invite you to watch the video from our visit. It captures the energy, the challenges, and the hope that define this remarkable school in Gomoa Wassa.
